Effect of Li Addition on Mechanical Properties and Deformation Behavior of Mg-based Bulk Metallic Glasses |

Mg-based Bulk Metallic Glasses have attracted increasing interest during last decade due to their high specific strength and relatively low cost. Also, Mg-based Bulk Metallic Glasses have a great potential as the lightest structural materials in engineering fields, hence a large number of investigations performed for weight reduction by using Mg. However, Bulk Metallic Glasses exhibit low plasticity at room temperature, which sometimes limits their practical applications. Thus, developments of novel alloys are required to overcome these demerits. For this purpose, In this study, Li is added in Mg-Cu-Y Bulk Metallic Glasses to fabricate the lightest and having prominent mechanical properties. A (Cu, Y) master alloy was prepared by arc melting. The Master alloys were then alloyed with Mg and Li in Boron-Nitride coated graphite using an induction furnace. The as-cast rods were prepared through injection casting with 2mm diameter. Structural investigations of the samples were carried out by XRD(X-ray diffractometry). The microstructure of the samples was analysed by SEM(Scanning Electronic Microscopy). Mechanical testing was done by compression tests carried out with UTM(Universal Testing machine). Further studies will discussed in detail. |
