Graphene is a novel material that attracts much attention due to its great potential in the applications ranging from electronics to materials design. To functionalize the graphene, it is necessary to use graphene derivatives, mostly graphene oxides, through chemical modifications. Graphene oxides are typically prepared using a mixture of sulfuric acid, sodium nitrate, and potassium permanganate. In this study, however, we used a recently-proposed method using sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, and potassium permanganate. The product was characterized using spectroscopic techniques including FT-IR, Raman, and XRD. Then the graphene oxide was further functionalized by introducing several types of functional groups. Finally, these functionalized graphene oxides were mixed to matrix polymers to produce nanocomposites, whose mechanical, electrical, and other properties were characterized and discussed. |
