Gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and thermal field-flow fractionation (ThFFF) are two of the most powerful methods to characterize the molecular weight and molecular weight distribution of polymers. It has been known that large molecules can undergo shear degradation when separated using traditional GPC columns. ThFFF is an open channel separation method that separates molecules on the basis of their diffusion and thermal diffusion coefficient. As there is no stationary packing phase, shear effects and absorption are minimized. In this study, to demonstrate and compare this phenomenon, rubber samples were analyzed using both GPC and ThFFF. As results, SEC gave lower molecular weight than those analyzed by ThFFF. In addition, ThFFF results gave the information of polymer and microgel in a single run. |
