Polyanilne (PANI) has found versatile engineering applications in the areas of opto-electronics, sensors and displays due to its good conductivity, chemical stability, and highly tunable doping level. However the practical applications have often been hindered by the poor solubility and processibility. For example, the conductive emeraldine base salts show poor solubility in most common solvents. Here we report a soluble PANI functionalized with methoxy poly(ethylene glycol) (MPEG). The PANI-MPEG is highly soluble in many polar organic solvents including THF, dioxane, and CHCl3. The solutions of PANI-MPEG exhibit reversible characteristic color change in response to the change of the metal ion concentration. We have characterized the formation of complex of PANI and metal ions by using UV and IR spectroscopy. We also demonstrate that the PANI-MPEG solutions can be applicable for Inkjet printing and making metal ion sensing papers. |
