A heparin-coated magnetic core/shell Fe3O4/Au nanoparticle was developed for effective photodynamic therapy (PDT), which may act as a water-soluble and biocompatible carrier for delivery of a hydrophobic PDT agent. The physicochemical properties of Fe3O4/Au nanoparticles were characterized by FT-IR, UV, XPS, DLS and TEM. The PDT agent, pheophorbide a (Pheo), was covalently conjugated to nanoparticle surface by using thiolated-heparin chains as spacers. The in vitro studies demonstrated that the Pheo-loaded Fe3O4/Au nanoparticle can efficiently deliver the drug into cells, and showed good phototoxicity to the cancer cells with light treatment. The present findings show that Pheo-loaded heparin-coated Fe3O4/Au nanoparticles are promising for effective PDT. |
