Synergic photocatalytic reduction of Cr (VI) and oxidation of citric acid using highly efficient porous hierarchical Bi2S3/Bi2WO6 photocatalyst |

Bismuth sulphide (Bi2S3)/bismuth tungstate (Bi2WO6) are efficient hierarchical heterostructured porous microspheres that have shown promising photocatalytic activity for the reduction of highly toxic and carcinogenic Cr (VI) and citric acid oxidation at the same time, in comparison to various heterostructured photocatalysts. Co-synthesis of the composites Bi2S3/Bi2WO6 were carried out in a ternary solvent medium (ethanol/acetic acid/water), ethyl acetate in water acted as soft template for microspheres. Composites were synthesized on basis of different Bi2S3 content and characterized using different spectroscopic, microscopic and surface area analysis techniques. Photocatalytic activity were further elucidated by photoluminescence spectrometry. Oxidation of citric acid increases the reduction of Cr (VI) up till an optimum point, highlighting its role as a hole scavenger. Synergic reduction of Cr (VI) and oxidation of citric acid makes this a promising photocatalyst material. |
