Succinic acid (1,4-butanedioic acid) is widely used in various fields such as foods, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics. Succinic acid production using biomass is highlighted because of harsh conditions and expensive catalysts of traditional process with petroleum. Crystallization process is important to separate pure succinic acid from other carboxylic acids in a broth. Crystallization of succinic acid by cooling, acidification, and salting-out was performed from saturated succinic acid aqueous solution to compare yields of each process. In addition, the processes were combined to increase a maximum yield of the crystallization. The combined crystallization in which all the processes were included represented the highest maximum yield of succinic acid among the other single and combined processes. Furthermore, at the same condition, all the combined processes produced more succinic acid than the sum of the products from the single processes in the combined process. The results represent that combined crystallization is useful for increasing yield of succinic acid in a separation process. |
