High performance PEMFC MEA with a low Pt loading prepared by electrostatic spray deposition. |

Photon exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are most promising energy conversion device for the future. PEMFC must be capable of operating at a high power density with a low platinum loading to reduce its production cost for commercialization. In this research, using electrostatic spray deposition (ESD) method to reduce platinum loading. ESD is a process that an aerosol of a solution is ejected from metal syringe nozzle with a high applied voltage to a thin film on the counter electrode. The solution consists of Nafion solution, Pt/C (Platinum on carbon black) and various solvents. . The catalyst surface morphology was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) image, the cathode electrochemical property and cell performance were measured by Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) and IV-curve. The catalyst layer made by ESD has a fractal surface morphology. These results substantially improve the performances. |
