Pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry is widely used for characterization of natural polymeric materials such as cellulose and starch. Pyrolysis of carbohydrates includes the step of dehydration and gives difficulties to pyrolyze. In such a case, Tetramethylammonium hydroxide(TMAH) is used to enhance volatility and reforming carbohydrates. In this study, samples were prepared with different molar ratios between carbohydrate and TMAH. In order to improve selectivity of methylation sites, each carbohydrate sample was pyrolyzed by mixing with silica. The major pyrolyzates were furans derivatives, methyl esters, and methylated benzene derivatives. We focused on variation of the methylated benzene derivatives depending on the quantity of TMAH. Our study gave priority to variation of relative abundances of benzene derivatives. Abundances of benzene derivatives were fairly different with the quantity of TMAH. Besides, pyrolysis of carbohydrate with silica showed different tendencies. |
