Plastics used outdoors are exposed to ultraviolet (UV) radiation which is often the cause of degradation. UV absorber(UVA)s are used to prevent UV radiation. Qualitative and quantitative analyses of these additives are important to understand polymer degradation studies. The analysis of UVAs is difficult for several reasons. The high molecular mass and polarity of many UVAs preclude the use of GC. HPLC with UV detector is only applicable to compounds having UV-absorbable group. These problems can be circumvented with the use of LC/APCI-MS. We analyzed Uvinul3035 and Uvinul3039 using LC/APCI-MS and investigated their ionization efficiencies, fragmentation patterns, solvated ion and solvent effect using methanol, ethanol, acetone, and chloroform. The fragment ions of m/z 250 was generated from [M+H]+ by loss of ethylene and 2-ethylhexene for Uvinul 3035 and Uvinul 3039. The fragment ions of m/z 232 and 204 were formed by the successive fragmentations of m/z 250 and loss of H2O and CO. |
