An anionic photo-responsive surfactant, N-(azobenzene-4-oxy-2-hydroxypropyl)-N-(butyloxy-2-hydroxypropyl)aminopropyl sulfonic acid sodium salt (G4AZAS), was synthesized and studied for wettability with contact angle measurement on various substrates. The G4AZAS was converted to 92.5% of the cis form when exposed to UV light, and was reconverted to 68% of the trans form when exposed to visible light. The contact angle value of the 0.01% trans-G4AZAS on the glass slide, which is a hydrophilic substrate, was 34.1°, while the value of the cis form was 9.8°. Then, the contact angle of the cis form changed to 21.4° under visible light irradiation (λ>450 nm). It is believed that the azobenzene group in the surfactant undergo photo-isomerization under visible light irradiation, resulting in increasing the hydrophobicity of the surfactant solution. Furthermore, the surfactant showed opposite tendency on the paraffin film, PET, and PE film because they are hydrophobic substrates. |
