제목 Physical properties of Poly(latic acid) and starch blends.
초록 Poly(latic acid) (PLA) is a biodegradable thermoplastic that can be produced from natural resources. Because of its good mechanical properties and processibility as well as biocompatibility, PLA can be used for producing packaging material and hygiene products. But its applications are limited by its high cost. Blending glanular starch with PLA reduces the cost, but the blend has poor mechanical properties. Because of weak interfacial attractions between starch glanules and the PLA matrix, strong interfacial adhesion can be achieved with the addition of a coupling agent to the blend system.
In this study, we have investigated that had blending with contained quantity PLA/starch at the various ratio. Here, we used Methylenedi-p-phenyl Diisocyanate(MDI) as coupling agent. Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM) and Universal Testing Machine(UTM) were used to investigate the morphology and mechanical properties of the blends. Thermal properties of the blends were measured using Differential Scanning Calorimeter(DSC). Photographic of SEM shows that reduced interfacial tension between the two phases. The presence of MDI also enhanced the mechanical properties of the blend.
Finally, the addition of MDI to PLA/starch allows to overcome the weakness of pure PLA/starch.
