제목 Modification of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube using Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization
초록 This presentation will describe a method to grow polystyrene from the sidewall of single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) in a controlled fashion via Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization (ATRP). Hydroxyl groups on SWNT were first introduced through electrophilic addition of chloroform followed by hydrolysis. Subsequent esterification with 2-chloro-propionyl chloride introduced ATRP initiator on the side wall of SWNT. Grafting polymerization of styrene from initiator-functionalized SWNT via ATRP produced polymer-coated SWNT. Obtained TEM images revealed that after polymerization, about 6 nm-thick polystyrene layer was uniformly formed on SWNT as shown in the below figure. In comparison with the pristine SWNT, polymer-functionalized SWNT showed improved solublity in various organic solvents such as THF, chloroform, methylenechloride, and alcohol.
