Low Rank Coal Supported Metal (Ni, Rh, Pt, and Pd) Catalysts for Methanol Steam Reforming |

Catalytic support plays an important role in achieving fundamental virtues of a catalyst; activity, selectivity and life time. Nowadays, carbon materials have been widely used for catalyst support. Low-rank coals (LRCs) that are rich in surface functional groups can be promising catalytic supports; excellent metal dispersion, high coking resistance, and recyclability. In this study, four different metals (Ni, Rh, Pt, and Pd) were dispersed on LRC successfully and their activity for MeOH steam reforming (MSR) was evaluated. Ni and Rh catalysts on LRC gave the best activity for MSR, showing 100% conversion and >80% hydrogen yield. Compared to conventional Cu/Zn catalysts, Rh and Ni were less susceptible to thermal sintering, but produced more CO gas. Different metals catalyze different reactions, showing difference in the carbon selectivity. Pt and Pd seem to catalyze methanol decomposition whilst Ni and Rh catalyze MSR and methanation of CO. |
