The focus of this work is to study the influence of regioselective substitution on the properties of cellulose graft copolymers. Graft copolymers with methyl methacrylate (MMA) were prepared by protecting primary hydroxyl group and introducing the methacrylate functionality. The copolymer was purified and used for film casting. The protection of primary hydroxyl group with 4-methoxytrityl chloride in anhydrous N, N-dimethylacetamide was followed by the functionalization with methacrylate groups using dibutyltin dilaurate as a catalyst. After deprotection of 4-methoxytrityl group, grafting was made with MMA and benzoyl peroxide. Copolymers were purified and used for film casting in order to evaluate the influence of regioselectivity. The graft copolymers were investigated by FTIR, 1H/13C NMR and DSC. Spectral results confirmed the successful protection and deprotection of primary hydroxyl group. The attachment of 2-isocyanoethyl methacrylate was confirmed by FTIR and 1H NMR. |
