A novel Nafion/α-zirconium phosphate (α-ZrP) multilayer thin film was fabricated on the commercial Nafion 117 in order to reduce methanol permeability in polymer electrolyte membrane for direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC). We synthesized layered α-ZrP with relatively high proton conductivity and characterized its structure by using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM). The XRD and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) measurements indicated that α-ZrP was fully exfoliated in ethanol using tetra-(n-butylammonium) hydroxide (TBA+OH-). The multilayer thin film prepared with the exfoliated α-ZrP and Nafion precursor was found to form ordered organic/inorganic multilayer structure by using ellipsometry, reflectance Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and XRD experiments. From the tests of DMFC performance, it was found that there was a significant effect on reducing the methanol permeability in surface modified Nafion 117 using multiplayer thin film, still maintaining a high proton conductivity. |
