Conducting polymers (CPs) are unique in that they have switchable properties due to their two or more mechanically stable oxidation state. Thus, their films or coatings can be easily switched by the application of small voltage and current to change volume during their electrochemical redox process. In particular, polypyrrole (PPy) has been studied most extensively because of its high electrical conductivity and good environmental stability under ambient condition. In this work, we prepared actuators consisting of two PPy films and a solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) based on poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF). To investigate the effect of dopant size on the actuation behavior of PPy actuator, three types of dopants such as sodium perchlorate (NaClO4), para-toluenesulfornate (pTS) and dodecylbenzenesulfonate (DBS) were introduced in PPy film. NaClO4, pTS and DBS have small, medium and bulky anion, respectively. The change of actuation mode according to dopant size was clearly observed. |
