Emulsion copolymerization of styrene with acrylates was carried out through microwave irradiation. The influences of the kinds of acrylates, the monomer contents, initiator contents, agitation speed and the reaction temperature on monomer conversion, particle size and its size distribution were investigated. Copolymerization rate by microwave irradiation was considerably increased compared to conventional heating(without microwave irradiation) and reaction rates were affected by the dipole moment of monomers. Characteristics of copolymers were evaluated by differential scanning calorimeter(DSC) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR). Morphologies of the copolymerized particles were investigated by scanning electron microscopy(SEM). |
