Highly Siliceous Chabazite Type Zeolite Membranes for Effective Separation of Wet CO2 Mixtures |

Chabazite (CHA) type zeolites with 0.37 × 0.42 nm2 of the pore size are suitable for separation of for CO2 (0.33 nm) from N2 (0.364 nm) or CH4 (0.38 nm). Furthermore, the siliceous composition of the CHA zeolite can reduce performance degradation by adsorption of the H2O vapor. A siliceous CHA membrane obtained with a nominal Si/Al ratio of 100 (CHA_100) showed separation factors of 13.4 for CO2/N2 and 37 for CO2/CH4 mixtures. Finally, the contribution of molecular transport through zeolitic and non-zeolitic parts (defects) of the CHA membrane was quantitatively analyzed by combining information extracted from image processing of fluorescence confocal optical microscopy images with a one-dimensional permeation model. It demonstrates that ~19% and ~20% of the total CO2 permeance of CHA_100 decreased due to transport inhibition by the physisorbed H2O molecules on the surface and defect of the membrane, respectively. |
