Polysorbate based nanoplatform |

Here we introduce an efficient nanoplatform based on polysorbate 80 for biomedical applications. Polysorbate 80 has been used for food and medical use as bio-compatible surfactant. Hydrophobic inorganic or organic materials can be effectively coated by polysorbate 80 for biomedical use. The modification of end functional hydroxyl group of polysorbate 80 to carboxylic acid or amine enables simple surface charge exchange of nanoplatform for effective cellular uptake, provides useful conjugation site for various targeting moieties. Thus, smart magnetic resonance imaging probes were synthesized hybridizing polysorbate 80 coated-magnetic nanoparticle with targeting moiety for specific magnetic resonance imaging of biomolecules. Additionally, effective gene transfection or stem cell labeling were possible based on surface charge optimization of nanocarrier. Consequently, these advantageous features of polysorbate 80 allowed us to design effective nanoplatform for biomedical applications. |
