Kinetics of the Reactive Compatibilization of Polyamide (PA) and Polypropylene (PP) blends by Maleic Anhydride grafted Polypropylene (MAH-g-PP) |

MAH-g-PP has been widely used as reactive compatibilizer of PA and PP blends. However, So far there have been limited studies on the reaction kinetics of blends prepared by reactive compatibilization. We investigated the effects of the MAH-g-PP content, reaction temperature and time on the reaction rate. We carried out a melt blending of PA and MAH-g-PP using twin-screw extruder at 150 oC and induced reaction using Brabender mixer and reactor at various temperatures. The kinetics of reactive compatibilization was analyzed with both FT-IR and rheometer. The FT-IR results showed that the peaks of cyclic anhydride changed as increasing reaction time because of the chemical reaction between amine groups of PA and anhydride groups of MAH-g-PP. The viscosity of extruded blends was measured as a function of shear rate and time at various fixed temperatures using rheometer. The morphological characteristics of the fractured surfaces after reaction were observed with SEM. |
