We have synthesized an 1,8-naphthalimide-based optical sensor for detecting high pH values and water content in water-miscible organic solvents. A guanidine moiety as a proton receptor was covalently attached to an 1,8-naphthalimide fluorophore to afford highly polar fluorescent sensor with reasonable solubility in highly alkaline solution. The fluorescence of the senor increased with increasing pH from 11.0 to 13.0. The senor also exhibited a fluorescence turn-off response to water in various organic solvents such as MeOH, EtOH, CH3CN, and 1,4-dioxane. The peak intensity of the fluorescence was almost proportional to the amount of water. Detection ranges and detection limits of the sensor for these solvents were investigated. |
