2,5-Furandicarboxylicacid (FDCA) is identified as renewable, biomass derived chemical for the production of polymers and resins; fossil derived terephthalic acid can be potentially replaced by FDCA. Production of FDCA from HMF remains a big challenge due to several intermediate products like difromylfuran (DFF), 5-hydroxymethylfuran-2-carboxylic acid, and levulinic acid formed during the reaction. Environmentally benign oxidation of HMF to FDCA in high yield was achieved in water solvent over metal oxide supported ruthenium as a heterogeneous catalyst using O2. Different metal oxide supports like MgO, La2O3, ZrO2, Al2O3, MgAl(O) and CeO2 were studied and influence of the support on this oxidation was monitored. Parametric variation studies revealed the mechanistic pathway of this reaction. |
