Poly(2,5-benzimidazole) (ABPBI) was prepared by condensation polymerization in polyphosphoric acid (PPA) with inexpensive and commercially available AB monomer, 3,4-diaminobenzoic acid. ABPBI grafted carbon nanotube (CNT) (ABPBI-g-CNT) nanocomposites can be conveniently synthesized in two-step reaction sequence. First, the grafting of the monomer 3,4-diaminobenzoic acid onto the surface of CNTs via “direct” Friedel-Crafts acylation reaction in PPA with optimized amount of phosphorous pentoxide (P2O5) to afford 3,4-diaminobenzoyl-functionalized carbon nanotuebes (DIF-CNT). Sencond, subsequent polymerization of the AB monomer in the presence of DIF-CNT would yield ABPBI-g-CNT. The resultant nanocomposites could potentially provide various application areas where require affordable, lightweight and multifunctional materials. |
