5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is a versatile chemical obtained from biomass-derived carbohydrates which can be converted to a wide range of chemicals and fuels. The selective oxidation of HMF leads to 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF), which finds application in furan based polymers, pharmaceutical intermediates and fine chemicals. However, the oxidation of HMF can give several oxidation products like DFF, 5-Hydroxymethylfuran-2-carboxylic acid, 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) and levulinic acid. So the heterogeneous catalyzed selective conversion of HMF to DFF is still remains a challenge due to multiple side reactions and separation of DFF from high boiling solvents. We have studied this reaction over Ru supported on γ-alumina as catalyst using molecular oxygen as an oxidant. Several low boiling environmentally friendly solvents were screened we obtained 80-95% conversion of HMF with >95% DFF selectivity under optimized conditions. |
