제목 Mechanical properties of norbornene-based nanocomposites incorporated with norbornene functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes
초록 Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) have outstanding intrinsic mechanical properties and are considered to be ideal filler in the polymer composite field. In this work, a norbornene-functionalized MWNT (NMWNT) was successfully prepared and characterized by infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to confirm covalent functionalization. We also investigated the effect of low loadings of NMWNT on mechanical properties of poly(dicyclopentadiene) (DCPD) copolymerized with 5-norbornene-2-carboxylic acid (NCA) under the 2nd generation Grubbs' catalyst. It was found that the NMWNT formed the stable dispersion in DCPD/NCA comonomers. With the increase of NMWNT loading, the elastic modulus and yielding tensile stress increased over unfilled poly(DCPD/NCA), without compromise in toughness. These enhanced properties are attributed to the good nanotube dispersion and strong nanotube-polymer interfacial adhesion.
