LNG-FPSO is an offshore comprehensive technology to exploit natural gas well in a deep and remote sea. There are mainly gas pre-conditioning processes including AGRU (acid gas removal unit) and liquefaction process in LNG-FPSO. The design for many separation columns in the topside of LNG-FPSO should consider the effects of offshore condition in contrast to the onshore columns, because the separation efficiency diminishes due to the offshore effects. To fundamentally understand the effects, column hydraulics including liquid hold up and pressure drop should be firstly studied. Hydraulics in a packed column is essential to understand the column operating region and mass transfer efficiency. The experiments were conducted with a structured packed column. For offshore conditions, permanent tilt and dynamic motion were selected as representative conditions. Electrical resistance tomography (ERT) sensor was used to measure the local holdup. With appropriate data processing methods, local and total holdup were calculated. By comparing holdup and pressure drop, the effects of offshore conditions on hydraulics were analyzed. |
