Nafion-based Composite Membrane Coated with Microporous Layered Silicate/Nafion for Direct Methanol Fuel Cells |

Microporous layered silicate AMH-3 has a 3D ordered porous structure that can be used as a permselective barrier and is therefore very promising as a solution for the methanol crossover problem of Nafion in direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). In order to apply this material to Nafion, the removal of the Na+ and Sr2+ cations located in the intralayer and interlayer spaces and the delamination of an individual layer must be carried out. We obtained delaminated AMH-3 by acid-hydrothermal treatment without the use of swelling agent. The coating of the Nafion-based composite membrane with the delaminated AMH-3/Nafion layer was carried out by means of a solution casting method respectively. The Nafion-based composite membrane was evaluated for liquid uptake, methanol permeability and proton conductivity. This membrane exhibited lower methanol permeability than neat Nafion while maintaining proton conductivity. We conclude that surface-modified Nafion with delaminated AMH-3 is a good candidate for the reduction of methanol crossover in DMFCs. |
