Mechanical Properties of Honeycomb Polymer Sheets |

To construct the structure-property relationships of patterned architectures depending on symmetry, mechanical properties of HPS were investigated with respect to polar-angles. According to tensile tests of HPS, it was found that Young’s modulus does depend on neither structural geometries nor thicknesses. By increasing the number of holes, tensile forces decreased in which the number of holes is closed to 19. The holes aligned along the apex of honeycomb were more effective to decrease tensile force than those located along the plane of honeycomb. Upon varying polar-angles, tensile forces with 19 holes were fluctuated up and down like an undamped negative sine wave. Stress concentrations upon stretching HPS were monitored by the deformed mesh lines on the in-plane surfaces, which results were well matched with those of FEA simulation. Based on results combined with simulations, it was concluded that tensile forces depend on the number of holes and thickness as well as the honeycomb. |
