Maximizing the efficiency of precious metal has been pursued in heterogeneous catalysis. In the present decade, single-atom catalysts (SACs) containing spatially isolated metal atoms stabilized on a support, have emerged as a promising materials. However, SACs cannot catalyze valuable surface reactions that require metal atom proximity. Here, we present metal (Pt, Pd and Rh) ensemble catalysts (denoted as ESCs) with 100% dispersion and reduced metallic surface state. More specifically, defective nanoceria was anchored on Al3+penta sites of activated γ-alumina, and then metal ESCs were impregnated on the nanoceria particles. The ESCs showed much superior activity than SACs and commercial catalyst for three-way catalytic reaction (TWC). The ESCs are highly durable against hydrothermal ageing at 900 °C for 24 h, long-term TWC for 420 h and recycling TWC. These active and durable ESCs can provide new insights beyond SACs for heterogeneous catalysis. |
