In this study, rice bran was used as a renewable bioresource for biodiesel production. First, a pilot-scale oil mill was developed to produce oil from raw rice bran. Then the pretreatment of the oil was investigated for the production of high-quality biodiesel in the subsequent processes. Especially, the large amounts of free fatty acids should be lowered as they would react with alkali catalyst to produce soaps that inhibit the reaction. Finally, three key parameters-temperature, the amount of catalyst and methanol concentration-were selected and their individual and mutual effects on biodiesel production were investigated in a batch system. A Box-Behnken design and response surface methodology(RSM) were emloyed to determine the optimum condition for enhanced biodiesel production. The experimental results showed that the RSM with the Box-Behnken design was a useful tool for achieving high rate of biodiesel production from rice bran oil. |
