Morphological Study on Degradation of Solution-grown Poly(l-lactide) Crystals |

Poly(l-lactide) (PLLA) solution-grown crystals (SGCs), which are the lozenge-shaped morphology of unique dimension with one side of 12 mm, were grown from dilute solution of acetonitrile. Morphological changes induced by alkaline and enzymatic degradations of PLLA SGCs were investigated by atomic force microscopy. Although their enzymatic degradation did not show the change of molecular weight, the alkaline hydrolysis of the crystals showed strong fragment of small molecular weights. This result indicates that the size of degradation mediums is very important factor for degradation behavior. |
