We synthesized 5,11,17,23-tetrakis(3-mercaptopropyl)calix[4]arene[1], 25,26,27,28-tetrakis(5-mercaptopenthoxy)calix[4]arene[2] containing aryl sulfide rings and 3-(diethylamino)-2-(4-ethylethyletherpentaphenylthio)diphenylsulfidecalix[4]arene[3], have four alkyl thiol linkages, which allow the calix[4]arenes to attach on to the gold surface. The surface plasmon resonance (SPR) spectroscopy allows to monitoring the binding behavior of the calix[4]arene derivatives to the gold surface, aromatic molecules, and metal ions. The 1, 2 and 3 bind very effectively on the gold surface and self-assembled layers of 1, 2 and 3 produce significant change in SPR signals. The metal ions used in this study are Ag+, Cd2+, Hg2+, Mn2+, Na+, Ni2+, and Pb2+. |
