Over the years, zirconium oxide (ZrO2) has been largely used in wide range of optical applications such as optical devices, high refractive index material, optical thin film, et al. due to its chemical and physical properties such as excellent chemical resistance, high refractive index, hardness, optical transparency and ionic conductivity. However it is hard to disperse in organic resin. So zirconia need to modify with coupling agent for dispersing nano-sized zirconia uniformly into the organic resin. In this study, zirconia nanoparticle synthesized by sol-gel method and modified surface by silane coupling agents. Zirconia nanoparticles synthesized by zirconium oxychloride octahydrate (ZrOCl2∙8H2O), ammonia solution or sodium hydroxide(NaOH) and then modified with silane coupling agents. From analysis zirconia particles consisted of intrinsic zirconia crystallite and 10nm sizes. The modified zirconia particles indicate chemical bonding between zirconia and silane coupling agents so, hydrophobicity also enhanced from the water floating test before the modification zirconia nanoparticles. |
