A graphene oxide (GO) is treated with ammonia solutions of different concentrations (14, 21, and 28%). After the treatment, no significant structural changes are observed in the ammonia-treated GO. Instead of, various nitrogen functional group are introduced on the GO surfaces. In particular, amine (C-NH2) groups exhibit significant changes, increasing 1.95, 2.57, and 2.79 at.% of nitrogen contents as ammonia solution concentration increases. The aminated GO-based epoxy composites exhibit an improvement in mechanical properties related to the presence of amine groups. The tensile and impact strength values are the highest (42.1 MPa and 12.3 J/m, respectively) in the epoxy composite prepared with GO treated with a 28% ammonia solution. These results are attributed to the effective interaction of the aminated GO with the epoxy matrix through the rigid interfacial bonding formed in the presence of an amine curing agent. |
