제목 Degradation studies on strength and structural properties of Ni-3YSZ anode support in Solid Oxide Fuel Cell during long term operation
초록 In the anode supported SOFCs, Ni-3YSZ cermet provides structural support and necessary porosity for anode operation at significantly reduced material cost as compared to Ni-8YSZ cermet. But Ni-3YSZ is susceptible to degradation in mechanical strength and structural integrity due to humidity. In this study, long term strength and structural degradation of Ni-3YSZ cermet at anode operating conditions was investigated. Powder methods were employed to prepare Ni-3YSZ and Ni-8YSZ powders which were subsequently pressed into rectangular bars (20 x 6 x 3 mm). These rectangular bars were sintered and then exposed to humidified hydrogen (30 % humidity) in a specially designed metallic compartment at 850 oC and 900 oC for long term degradation. The mechanical strength, microstructural, porosity and phase changes of the samples were characterized before test and after 100, 500, 1000 hours of long term degradation. The results show ~ 70% decrease in mechanical strength of Ni-3YSZ after 1000 hrs. XRD and SEM analysis showed new phases and changes in microstructure. While Ni-8YSZ cermet shows only ~ 20% decrease in strength and no new phases were identified. These results will be discussed in this talk.
