Facile Solution Synthesis of Colloidal CeO2 Quantum-dots for Enhanced Photoelectrochemical and Electrochemical Anti-corrosion Performances |

This study reports a facile solution synthesis of colloidal CeO2 quantum dots (QDs) to improve the photoelectrochemical performance of BiVO4 (BVO) photoanode for solar water-splitting. Highly crystalline CeO2 QDs with an average size of ~3 nm were synthesized by reacting Ce3+ solution with citric acid at 50 oC. The QD solution was directly applied to BVO photoanode synthesized by a chemical bath deposition method. Interestingly, the CeO2/BVO photoanode exhibited an enhanced photocurrent density of 2.1 mA/cm2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE (0.5 M PBS, under one sun illumination), which is three times higher than pristine BVO (~0.6 mA/cm2). The photocurrent density was further increased to ~4 mA/cm2 by depositing CoOx electrocatalyst. Additionally, the QD solution was applied to AZ31B magnesium alloy to investigate its corrosion inhibition behavior. We found that the corrosion resistance of CeO2/AZ31B increases by surface passivation, thus reducing corrosion extent greatly. |
