This work aims to improve flame retardation property of epoxy composites using ammonium polyphosphate (APP). However, APP could be migrated the surface of composite due to the weak compatibility with epoxy resin. To prevent the migration, 4,4'-diaminodiphenylmethane (DDM) was selected as both curing agent and charring agent for surface modification. We observe both fast curing effect analyzing the curing behavior by Friedman method and significant improvement of thermal degradation, and flame retardancy of epoxy composites with the amine-modified APP (mAPP). Moreover, epoxy/mAPP composites showed higher flame retardation properties and compact char structures. Finally, we also found the correlation with improvements of flame retardation properties and char structures of epoxy composites by theory of rubber elasticity. * This work was supported by Regional Development Research Program (19RDRP-B076272-06) funded by Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport of Korean government. |
