The surfaces of hollow TiO2 nanoparticles were modified by alkoxysilane dyes for various optical applications. The hollow titania were prepared based on polymer core/titania shell nanoparticles and various silane complex precursors and aromatic azo NLO compounds were used for the modification of the surfaces of these hollow titania. Azobenzenes as a typical aromatic azo compound were used as an azo NLO compound. Their colors originate from the absorbance of visible light, which delocalizes electrons in the benzene and azo groups, leading to a conjugated system, whereby the N=N group is the chromophore. The optical and NLO properties of the modified TiO2 nanoparticles were precisely characterized. |
