OPTICAL PROPERTIES OF POLARIZING FILMS WITH ANTHRAQUINONE-BASED AZO DYES |

Polarizing films are important optical components for LCDs. The most commercially available polarizing film is iodine-poly(vinyl alcohol) complex. As the application fields of LCDs are becoming wider, the demand of dye-poly(vinyl alcohol) complex with high durability is increasing. However, optical properties of dye polarizing films are lower than iodine polarizing films. In order to enhance the optical performance of the dye-polarizing film, transition dipole moment and linear structure of dichroic dyes need to be considered. Other important factors of optical properties are efficient adsorption and orientation. On the basis of aforementioned conditions, anthraquinone-based azo dyes were designed and considered through molecular modeling. These dyes were synthesized and dye polarizing films were prepared using them. The optical properties of the polarizing films were investigated from the viewpoint of dye structures. |
