제목 Effect of MAS glass infiltration on flexural strength of Zirconia Toughened Alumina (ZTA) technique
초록 The surface residual compression by infiltration of glass of relatively smaller coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) is used for strengthening the engineering ceramics. In the present investigation, efforts have been made to improve the surface properties of ZTA (alumina containing ~10wt% zirconia) by infiltrating Magnesium Aluminum Silicate glass (MAS) which has lesser CTE than ZTA. Glass infiltration was done on the centrifugally cast ZTA surface at 1500C for different isothermal times ranging from 1 to 5 hours. The flexural strength was found to be increased initially with increasing time and it reached to maximum (increased by ~30%) after 2 h holding. The longer holding time does not seem to be beneficial as there is decrease in strength. The EDX (Energy Dispersed X-ray) analysis indicated a compositional change of the MAS by the dissolution of some alumina and zirconia from the matrix significantly reducing the CTE to much smaller values. This mismatch in CTEs causes the development of internal stresses during cooling and hence, improves the flexural strength and toughness of ZTA. This technique provides a very simple and cost effective method to improve the surface properties of ZTA
