Delaminated MCM-22 (MWW topology) zeolite precursors forming nanosheet ITQ-2 zeolites were employed as catalysts for the conversion of acetylene into aromatics (e.g., BTX) and aliphatics. Aromatization performances of ITQ-2 zeolites were comparable to that of the parent MCM-22 zeolites. However, in contrast to MCM-22, ITQ-2 zeolites yielded higher amounts of light C3-C8 hydrocarbons than C6-C8 aromatics. This behavior is attributed to the significant fraction of external active sites found on the exfoliated structures of ITQ-2, thereby reducing residence and reaction times. Nevertheless, initial BTX selectivities clearly demonstrated a linear relationship with the amount of Brønsted acid sites for both MCM-22 and ITQ-2 zeolites, but the latter showed much slower deactivation rates. In addition, regenerated nanosheet catalysts exemplified analogous catalytic performances compared to fresh samples, thus revealing the structural stability of ITQ-2 zeolites. |
