Hydrous MnO2 nanowires were easily synthesized by one-pot synthesis with a simple ball-milling method. The as prepared MnO2 nanowires were characterized with scanning emission microscopy (SEM), transmit emission microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer‒Emmett‒Teller (BET), and X-ray photon spectroscopy (XPS) to show catalytic activity with suitable nano-size (4-5 nm) and morphology. The furfuryl alcohol was selected as substrate and reaction was carried out in toluene solvent at 100°C under only molecular oxygen as a terminal oxidant. The MnO2 nanowire catalyst exhibited excellent yield of furfural with high selectivity and conversion. The catalytic performance was checked with the recycle test and catalyst showed good mechanical strength with no appreciable loss in activity over five reaction cycles. |
