Bentonite is the most important material used in drilling mud, which increases the viscosity of the drilling mud, shear thinning behavior, and conducting fluid loss. Recent advances in nanotechnology have made it possible to fabricate bentonite on a nanoscale, contributing significantly to increase the performance of drilling mud. Here, in situ method were used to make nano bentonite in a more efficient way than previous reported ball milling method. The optimum conditions for synthesizing nano bentonite based on the existing ultrasonic treatment were found. In addition, in order to compare the nano-bentonite produced by the ultrasonic treatment with the conventional ball milling method, the size, the surface charge of the particles, and rheological properties were compared. The viscosity of the drilling mud produced by sonication was 43% higher than that of bare bentonite which was attributed to its nanowire structure. |
