Synthesis and characterization of clay based hybrid material and its antimicrobial behavior study |

In recent years the synthesis and application of clay-based antimicrobial materials have attracted great interest due to the worldwide concern about public health. Organically modified inorganic clay shows enormous advantages in their synthesis and application with organophilicity. Generally antibacterial compounds are more effective when they are released from an inorganic carrier. Intercalation of organic antibacterial materials into the interlayer gallery of clays is not a complicated process. The present study focused on the synthesis of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide intercalated bentonite by simple ion exchange mechanism. The synthesized organoclay was characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and elemental analysis. Their antibacterial activity was assayed by diffusion method with two Gram-positive (Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus) and two Gram-negative (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas species,) test bacteria. It was observed that chemically modified organo bentonite was active against only Gram-positive bacteria. The resultant organoclay will be of potential use in the synthesis of organoclay-based material with antibacterial activity. |
