Formation of novel bio-elastomer based poly(styrene-butadiene) and epoxidized soybean oil |

Abstract: A novel bio-elastomer was successfully synthesized via the reaction between poly(styrene-butadiene) lithium and epoxidized soybean oil (ESO). The reaction started from the formation of poly(styrene-butadiene)lithium, and the epoxidized soybean oil was added before termination step. The reaction is proposed to take place by ring opening of the epoxide group and to yield an alcoholate anion. The alcoholate anion was then terminated by hydrogen abstraction from methanol, leading to the formation of chain-end ESO functionalized poly(styrene-butadiene). The effect of the ratio of poly(styrene-butadiene) to ESO on the formation of poly(styrene-butadiene) bio-elastomer (SB-ESO) was studied. And the bio-elastomer was analyzed by GPC, NMR and FTIR. The mechanical properties of SB-ESO were compared with normal poly(styrene-butadiene) (SB) and commercial SBS (styrene-butadiene-styrene triblock copolymer). |
