Modification of coralline scaffolds using collagen and chitosan |

Coral is a natural ceramic of which major ingredients are calcium carbonate (CaCO3). Due to porous structures similar to cancellous bone, coral has been used for a bone replacement material. Coralline porosity is appropriate for the promotion of bone regeneration. In this study, we modified the surface of coral scaffolds by using natural polymeric substances such as collagen and chitosan in order to improve its biocompatibility and biostability. The biological characteristics were analyzed using various analytical methods including SEM, HPLC, and cell assays. Our results demonstrate that the surface modification improved the biocompatibility of corals. |
