The first report on a new type of dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) was published by Grätzel and co-workers, and they attained 10% of overall energy conversion efficiency by improving TiO2 electrodes in simulated solar light. In DSSCs, organic solvent-based liquid electrolytes with inorganic triiodide/iodide as redox couple are generally used even though some shortcomings. To overcome the issued problems to the liquid electrolytes, the quasi-solid-state electrolytes have been proposed by incorporating low-molecular weight gelators and addition of fumed silica nanoparticles. In this work, we have prepared a thixotropic gel electrolyte employing dicationic bis-imidazolium iodide salts PEOmBIm-I and hydrophilic fumed silica for improving both the solidification tendency of a electrolyte system and the Voc without using 4-tert-butylpyridine in DSSCs. |
