Polypropylene (PP) composites incorporated with hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets (hBN) were prepared and their mechanical and thermal properties were measured. hBN was modified with alkyl chains (fBN) to improve miscibility with PP matrix through a simple sonication-assisted alcoholysis. The conditions of alcoholysis reaction were optimized by monitoring the change of chemical structure and amount of grafted alkyl chain using FT-IR and TG analysis, respectively. Young’s modulus and tensile strength of PP composites were enhanced by adding fBN as nanofiller and the values were higher than that of PP/hBN composites since the alkyl chains of fBN helped filler to disperse well in PP matrix and enhance the interfacial adhesion between filler and PP matrix. In addition, thermal stability and conductivity measured by isothermal TG analysis and hot disk method, respectively, were also improved as the fBN added. |
