Strings of carbon-doped ZnO nanoparticles with visible light photocatalytic activity |

Among the various semiconductor photocatalysts, ZnO has been widely studied due to its high photosensitivity and non-toxicity. However, the photocatalytic activities achieved with ZnO is low due to its wide band gap. Thus, it is necessary to reduce the band gap to make ZnO visible light sensitive. Carbon doping is an easy route to reduce the band gap. Block copolymers can be used as a template to fabricate desired nanostructures. Here, we used poly(styrene-block-2-vinylpyridine) as a template to induce carbonized ZnO nanostrings through solvent anealing.The spin cast film was dipped in ZnO precursor solution followed by oxidizing the precursor. Direct carbonization was adopted to obtain C-doped ZnO. The topological studies were done using AFM and optical studies was used to study the altered band gap of C-doped ZnO. A red shift in the absorption peak enables ZnO to abosorb visible light . The photocatalytic activity of the C-ZnO nanostructure was studied through the degradation of dye. |
